Summer is officially underway today and Shallyn's Physical Therapy and Wellness Services is in full continuing education provision mode for fellow Physical Therapists, Physical Therapist Assistants, Occupational Therapists and Occupational Therapist Assistants.  We recently enjoyed providing hands on education surrounding the shoulder girdle to therapists working within the prison system.  We touched on cervical assessment that presents as shoulder impairment, shoulder joint assessment and manual/exercise treatment, upper rib assessment and thoracic assessment.  We enjoyed a round robbin discussion of various upper extremity symptom cases.  Thank you Federal Bureau of Prisons, Aurora for having us!

Stay tuned for details of Shallyn's next continuing education course on Functional Balance coming in July 2018.

Tennis or Golf making your elbow unhappy this summer?

Elbows can be a nuisance to calm down once aggravated.  The key to identifying the cause of your achy elbow is to keenly assess the areas around your elbow -- what is your shoulder stability like?  What is your wrist mobility like?  How are the nerves firing from your neck into your arm?  Once keying in on your contributors to your achy elbow, then we need to take a serious look at the mechanics you erroneously place on your elbow throughout your day.  Where does your thumb face when lifting your arm toward your head or overhead?  What is your sequence of muscle recruitment and thus does it add stress or decrease stress into your elbow?  What is your muscle and nerve pliability in that arm?  As I like to say, the elbow (and knee) are like a middle child, directly impacted by what's above and below.  Without direct trauma to the elbow itself, you can be pretty sure your achy elbow is coming from a shoulder and/or wrist imbalance or cervical condition that is yet to be identified.

Contact Shallyn at Shallyn's Physical Therapy and Wellness Services to find out more about the cause and cure to your achy elbow symptoms.
